Ever wondered what the “crazy-good” skincare product your grandma might have sworn by was?
It’s actually tallow—rendered beef fat.
Hear me out. When it’s made properly, tallow is soft, creamy, and incredibly nourishing for the skin. It’s packed with the same vitamins and healthy fats your skin already makes, making it one of the most effective natural moisturisers on earth.
I know this because I’ve lived it. Years ago, I had severe eczema on my eyelids and stubborn acne that left me embarrassed and self-conscious. Doctors and prescription creams didn’t work. Out of desperation, I started researching how people cared for their skin before synthetic creams existed. That’s when I rediscovered tallow balm—the exact stuff Cleopatra is believed to have used thousands of years ago in Egypt and Rome.
I made my own balm from grass-fed tallow and watched my eczema and acne fade away. My skin became healthy and glowing again. After sharing with my friends and family and continuing to improve the balm with their feedback, I decided to bring it to the world That’s how Tallow You was born, and why I’m so passionate about sharing it with you.
Why Is Tallow So Special?
Tallow balm is different from plant-based oils and modern moisturisers because it’s bio-identical to your skin’s natural oils. That means it sinks in easily and works with your skin instead of just sitting on top.
Tallow is naturally rich in:
-Vitamins A, D, E & K – essential for skin repair and renewal
-Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) – a potent anti-inflammatory that helps soothe irritation
-Stearic & Oleic acids – fatty acids that restore and protect the skin barrier
Unlike modern creams filled with vegetable oils, petroleum products, preservatives, and artificial fragrances, tallow balm is completely natural and non-irritating. It nourishes your skin rather than masking symptoms.
A Little History Lesson
Tallow balm isn’t a new trend. It’s been used as a natural moisturiser for thousands of years.
-The ancient Egyptians and Romans used tallow balms as their go-to for soft, glowing skin and for healing burns and scrapes.
-Even just 200 years ago, tallow was a staple in homes worldwide—used in soaps, salves, and lotions.
So, what changed? Industrial farming and the rise of synthetic products pushed our traditional skincare like tallow aside. But now, we’re going back to what actually works: simple, natural ingredients our bodies recognise.
Tallow Balm Benefits for Skin
Tallow balm can help you with many common skin issues. Here’s how:
1. Dry, Cracked Skin
Tallow balm is the ultimate moisturiser. It softens dry, rough patches and seals in moisture—without leaving a greasy residue.
2. Eczema and Psoriasis
Many of our customers (and myself and people I know personally!) have seen improvements in eczema symptoms after using tallow balm. It calms irritation and provides the building blocks your skin needs to heal itself naturally.
3. Redness and Sensitivity
Tallow’s anti-inflammatory properties help calm down red, stressed-out skin while strengthening the protective barrier.
4. Wrinkles and Fine Lines
Tallow balm supports your skin’s collagen production and keeps your microbiome balanced. That means smoother, healthier-looking skin without harsh chemicals.
How to Choose a Quality Tallow Balm
If you’re new to tallow skincare, look out for these when buying your first balm:
1. Tallow as a Main Ingredient: It should be the first ingredient listed, not buried under coconut oil or other cheaper fillers.
2. No Synthetic Fragrance: Fragrances can irritate sensitive skin. Look for fragrance-free or balms scented only with pure essential oils.
3. Grass-Fed, Local Tallow: Cows raised on pasture produce tallow richer in vitamins and antioxidants. Plus, supporting local farming is always a win.
4. Only one 'secondary' oil: We use a little olive oil (10-20%) to soften our tallow balm. But some companies blend their tallow with multiple oils, meaning that even if tallow is the main ingredient it could be only 30% of the volume or less.
5. Don't bother with 'whipped': Whipped tallow balm is roughly 70% air. While some people prefer this kind of tallow balm for its light, airy texture, most of the volume you're paying for is just that-air. Not to mention that your tallow comes to you already oxidised throughout. And that air has some water in it which will make the product go off. No thanks.
What Makes Tallow You Different
At Tallow You, we do things the old-fashioned way:
-We use 100% Australian grass-fed tallow, sourced from happy, healthy cows in Gippsland, Tasmania, and the Mornington Peninsula.
-Our balm is made in small batches using a low-heat, water-free process that preserves all the nutrients.
-We never use seed oils, petroleum products, parabens, phthalates, or other nasties—just pure, natural skincare.
As someone who struggled with painful eczema and acne, I know how frustrating it is when nothing works. That’s why I’m committed to making a product that’s safe, effective, and rooted in tradition.
-Sincerely, Jarryd.
